The Project
When the owner of The Fruit Stand signed a lease in Columbus’ Short North Arts District, he brought eight locations of experience to the table and a clear vision for what he needed. This out-of-town client based in the Cleveland area came to Columbus Building Co. to handle the critical MEP work for his newest location, including a full plumbing and electrical build-out in what was previously a hair salon.
We understand that every project comes with different needs. This particular client already had a portion of the finish work covered. Our team was able to step in and handle the work that requires licensed trades and permits, working seamlessly alongside what was already in motion.
It was his first time working with a general contractor, and Columbus Building Co. made it a smooth experience from start to finish.
The Scope of Work
Remedy Spa & Salon Suites required a full transformation of the existing space with multiple services, including:
Plumbing
Full plumbing installation including multiple new sinks, all associated drainage, a grease trap system, and a new hot water heater.
Electrical
New circuits installed throughout to support commercial kitchen equipment and all additional electrical requirements.
ADA Door Operator
Installation of an ADA-compliant automatic door operator unit, required by the City of Columbus.
The Challenge
The engineering drawings for this project had a significant oversight: the grease trap system was specified in a way that left no room for the access lid to be removed for routine maintenance.
It sounds like a small detail, but it would have created a problem down the road and required a full revision submission to the City of Columbus to correct. This process can take weeks and significantly delay an opening.
Columbus Building Co. identified the issue on-site and worked with the client to find a practical fix: raising the sink with extended legs to create the necessary clearance. The result was a fast solution that didn’t require revision submissions or weeks of waiting so we were able to keep the project moving on schedule.
The Result
The Fruit Stand opened in the Short North on time and fully code-compliant. For a client who had never worked with a general contractor before, the experience set a new standard for what that relationship could look like: clear communication, practical problem solving, and a team that treats every project, regardless of size, with the same level of care.
